Luke Heaton

A Brief History of Mathematical Thought by Luke Heaton explores the evolution of the language of mathematics and its impact on science, philosophy, and human culture. From stone-age rituals to calculus and the concept of computation, Heaton shows how mathematics has shaped the way people think and has enabled new technologies. The book is structured into thirteen chapters split between four sections, tracing the fascinating history of mathematical practice and focusing on the impact of key conceptual innovations. Heaton illuminates the fundamental concept of number, explores the origins of calculus and non-Euclidean geometries, examines the concept of the infinite and formal logic, and considers the critical role of mathematics in our ongoing attempts to comprehend the world around us.
