“[Hawking] sprinkles his explanations with a wry sense of humor and a keen awareness that the sciences today delve not only into the far reaches of the cosmos, but into the inner philosophical world as well.”—The New York Times Book Review
Thirteen extraordinary essays shed new light on the mystery of the universe—and on one of the most brilliant thinkers of our time.
In his phenomenal bestseller A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking literally transformed the way we think about physics, the universe, reality itself. In these thirteen essays and one remarkable extended interview, the man widely regarded as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein returns to reveal an amazing array of possibilities for understanding our universe.
Building on his earlier work, Hawking discusses imaginary time, how black holes can give birth to baby universes, and scientists’ efforts to find a complete unified theory that would predict everything in the universe. With his characteristic mastery of language, his sense of humor and commitment to plain speaking, Stephen Hawking invites us to know him better—and to share his passion for the voyage of intellect and imagination that has opened new ways to understanding the very nature of the cosmos. -

Quantum physics is the bridge that elegantly connects two heretofore separate parts of ourselves in one stunning stroke, unifying the physical with the spiritual dimension of experience.Written for readers with no background in quantum physics, Levy contemplates the deeper philosophical underpinnings of quantum physics, exploring the fundamental conditions it provokes: • What is implied by the concept of no “objective reality?”• How are we participating via our consciousness in creating our experience of a reality that quantum theory itself describes as “dreamlike?”• What are the implications for us in our everyday lives that as quantum theory reveals that what we call reality is more like a dream that we had previously imagined? -

Mr Bryson has a natural gift for clear and vivid expression. I doubt that a better book for the layman about the findings of modern science has been written ― Sunday Telegraph
A fascinating idea, and I can’t think of many writers, other than Bryson, who would do it this well. It’s the sort of book I would have devoured as a teenager. It might well turn unsuspecting young readers into scientists. And the famous, slightly cynical humour is always there ― Evening Standard

Of course, there are people much better qualified than Bill Bryson to attempt a project of this magnitude. None of them, however, can write fluent Brysonese, which, as pretty much the entire Western reading public now knows, is an appealing mixture of self-deprecation, wryness and punnery ― Spectator
The very book I have been looking for most of my life… Bryson wears his knowledge with aplomb and a lot of very good jokes ― Daily Mail
